Arthur C. Hanlon, AIA

Since 1992, Arthur has brought his passion, leadership, and expertise to Shope Reno Wharton. He received his undergraduate architecture degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After apprenticing with prestigious firms in Philadelphia and New York, Arthur joined Shope Reno Wharton and became a partner in 1996. He is NCARB accredited and holds architectural licenses in multiple states. Arthur’s avocation outside of the office is sailing and any water-related activity. He notes, “Observing waterfront residences while cruising along the eastern shoreline has crystallized for me what makes for a memorable home—classic shapes, great proportions and the ability to gracefully weather both the elements and fleeting stylistic trends. These principles apply to all of our projects from the coast of Rhode Island to the mountainous terrain of Aspen. Our practice strives to design beautiful, functional structures that will be cherished for generations.”

Jerry L. Hupy, AIA

Sometimes timing is everything. Just after completing graduate studies in architecture at Clemson University and traveling abroad, Jerry began his career at SRW. In 1993 he became a principal and in his three decades at the firm, Jerry has designed a host of what he calls “amazing projects” that are primarily residential; a handful of commercial; and a collection of exclusive golf clubs located up and down the East Coast. He says, “It’s a joy to work with clients and help them visualize their dreams. SRW is an incredible place to work. We have such a talented team and have built strong relationships with our clients, interior designers, landscape architects and builders. The best compliment we can receive is to hear our clients say, ‘I love my house.’” Jerry’s numerous other passions include traveling, reading, watching movies, cooking, gardening, running and cycling, and supporting the arts and music.

Michael O. McClung, AIA, LEED AP

Michael grew up in historic Lewisburg, West Virginia where generations of his family have lived since before the revolution. His love of architecture grew from his years in Lewisburg where eighteenth and nineteenth-century buildings are in continual use. Michael earned his architectural degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with studies at the Alexandria Center for Urban Studies and the Virginia Tech Center for European Studies based in Lugano, Switzerland. After graduation, honed his passion for beautifully detailed design at an award-winning firm in upstate New York. Six years later, Michael joined SRW and was named a principal in 2006. Today, he continues to lead collaborative efforts within the firm for numerous project types. Always compelled by residential architecture, he enjoys the opportunity to genuinely understand his clients’ unique aspiration of home. Larger projects provide excitement too and require a broader perspective—like the 100,000-square-foot expansion of the Greenbrier Hotel and the subsequent chapel on the grounds. “In every commission,” Michael says, “it is the creative vision and commitment to details that guide and fulfill successful projects.” Michael is LEED and NCARB accredited and holds licensure in several states. Outside the office, he has a wide range of interests and spends time in nature and traveling with his family.

John W. Gassett, AIA

Originally from Massachusetts, John spent childhood summers on Cape Cod where his love of traditional building forms, materials, and craftsmanship began. His early experiences on the Cape established a passion for creating timeless residential architecture where families can build generations of memories. Initially, John earned his degree in Building Construction at Wentworth Institute and pursued a career as a builder until a unique travel opportunity came his way. He spent several years crewing on yachts while exploring the architectural and cultural heritage of the South Pacific. On his return to the United States, he studied art at the Rhode Island College and completed his architectural degree at Cornell University. After graduation, John practiced residential architecture and urban planning in Switzerland, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York before joining SRW in 1996. He became a principal in 2006 and brings his synthesis of classical training and years of construction management to help clients create homes of exceptional beauty and enduring craftsmanship. He is licensed to practice architecture in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Utah. When not at the office, John divides his time between his home in Madison, CT and New York, and with his wife enjoys culinary and cultural offerings around the world.

Don H. Aitken, AIA

Originally from Prince Edward Island, Don earned his architectural degree from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (now Dalhousie University). Upon completion he was awarded the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Student Medal. Prior to joining SRW in 1997, Don traveled extensively in Europe and Scandinavia to study residential housing and worked for architectural firms in Oslo, Halifax, Toronto, New York City, and Los Angeles. He became a principal at SRW in 2006 and holds professional licenses in New York and California. Although passionate about residential design, Don has also worked on large institutional and equestrian facilities. Don enjoys the challenges that each new project presents and together with his partners endeavors to make thoughtful, memorable places that respond to every client’s needs and to each unique site. Outside the firm, Don enjoys traveling and photography.
